Transparent PNG vs JPG for cutouts
Why cutouts need PNG (or WebP with alpha) — and when JPG is the wrong export format.
JPG cannot store transparency. If you export a cutout as JPG, the “removed” background becomes a flat color — usually white or black — and you lose the ability to composite the subject onto anything else.
PNG keeps the edge you paid for

WebP with alpha is the smaller modern option
WebP can keep transparency at a smaller size. Use it on the web when your stack supports it. PNG remains the safest default for design tools, print prep, and marketplaces that expect a classic transparent file.
After export you can still convert or compress the PNG for the web. Keep an uncompressed master if you will edit the cutout again — recompressing a thin alpha edge is how halos show up.
Steps
- Remove the background. Generate the cutout and preview on a checkerboard.
- Download PNG. Keep alpha. Do not flatten to JPG unless you want a solid color.
- Optional: convert for the web. Compress or switch to WebP after you have a master PNG.
